Kimi Lyn Smith (aka Kim Smith)
Songwriter specialising in alternative rock and edgy pop. With influences including Garbage, Radiohead and Snow Patrol, I write delicately crafted songs with resonances of Fiona Apple, Metric and KT Tunstall, for myself and other artists with a commercial approach. My co-writes include Iain Archer (Snow Patrol) and Heidi Berry (4AD). Please get in touch if you’re looking for tracks to sync or for material to record.
Originally from Canada, I started out learning classical piano as a child, moving on to self-taught guitar and writing songs in my mid-teens. After relocating to London UK in 1996, I formed a band, continued to develop my songwriting, and completed a BA in Commercial Music. In October 2010, I completed a Master’s Degree in Songwriting at Bath Spa University. I returned to my hometown, Toronto, in May 2011.
Currently I am involved in several collaborative songwriting projects, and working on a solo album. I enjoy singing and playing guitar and the melodica. Although primarily a songwriter, I have performed in a number of cities internationally.
My material is said to have resonances of Aimee Mann, KT Tunstall, Snow Patrol, Garbage, Metric, Placebo, Bowie, Judee Sill, Fiona Apple, The Breeders, Kristen Hirsh, Indigo Girls, The Cardigans, Martha Wainwright, Thea Gilmore, Laura Marling, Throwing Muses, Belly, Alanis Morrisette, Vampire Weekend, The Fray, Republica and Veruca Salt.
